How does natural fat transfer work?

Fat transfer is a three-step process:

  • Step one: Fat is harvested from an area of the body with an excess. The donor area is numbed with local anesthesia, and gentle liposuction is performed to ensure the fewest cells are damaged when extracted. The donor areas are typically the love handles, abdomen, or thighs.
  • Step two: The fat cells are cleansed and purified to remove any excess fluid, debris, or dead cells.
  • Step three: The purified fat cells are meticulously injected, droplet by droplet, into the facial area to be restored.

During the injection process, the area is gently massaged to help the cells become integrated into the natural tissues.

What is the procedure like to experience?

Facial fat transfer is an outpatient procedure. For comfort, the donor area is numbed with anesthesia, and a tiny incision is placed, through which excess fat cells are removed. You will not experience any pain or discomfort during the fat extraction process and will rest comfortably on a treatment bed. The fat extraction process brings an added benefit, sculpting away excess body fat. You will wait a few minutes while the fat cells are purified. 

The area of the face to be treated is numbed in preparation for the injections. The fat cells are loaded into a syringe and then injected to enhance lips, facial volume, smooth wrinkles and creases, or restore volume. Depending on the number of areas to be treated, the procedure may require between one to two hours. 

What is the recovery time?

After your procedure is complete, you can return home. You will need to plan for a week to ten days off so that any facial swelling and bruising can subside. You will have prescription pain medication to stay comfortable for the first few days. You can apply cold compresses to help reduce swelling. In most cases, discomfort is minor, and recovery is uneventful. The donor area will be protected with a compression garment.
