Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons. In fact, many doctors no longer perform rhinoplasty because it is so difficult to do properly. San Diego Rhinoplasty Considerations

What makes rhinoplasty so difficult to perform properly? There are a number of important variables that must be controlled in achieving the proper aesthetics of the nose, and all of them must be weighed carefully against the proportions of the rest of your face to make the surgery completely successful. This is why rhinoplasty is best performed by an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Moradi, a rhinoplasty specialist in San Diego.

General Size

In classical aesthetics, the ideal nose occupied a third of the face's height, and a fifth of its width. The height of the nose is measured from the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose. The width of the nose is measured at its widest point. In general, a slightly smaller nose is preferable on women. Of course, faces are all different, and sometimes a slightly larger nose can complement a curvaceous face.

The angle between the plane of the brow ridge and the top of the nose is called the nasofrontal angle. In classical aesthetics, it is considered best if this angle is between 115 to 130 degrees, and is important also because it contributes to the projection of the nose, the extent to which the nose goes forward from the face. In general, projection is measured by creating a vertical line through the crease of the nose, then placing a perpendicular out to the nose's tip, perpendicular to the line from the top of the auditory canal to the bottom of the eye socket that runs through the crease at the side of the nose. The triangle formed by these lines with the bridge of the nose should be roughly a 3-4-5 right triangle, making the angle between the bridge of the nose and the vertical between 30-40 degrees. However, it is possible to have attractive variations outside this range. For example, the bridge of Nicole Kidman's nose makes an angle over 40 degrees with the vertical, but is still considered by many to be quite attractive.

The Lower Angles

A line drawn from the tip of the chin to the tip of the nose should meet the line along the bridge of the nose at an angle of about 120-130 degrees. In addition, the lips should be 2-4 mm behind the chin-nose line. If the lips are too close to this line, the angle can be corrected with chin augmentation, but if they are too far, rhinoplasty is generally indicated to bring the tip of the nose back. There is also the nasolabial angle. This angle is defined as being between the bottom of the nose and the philtum--the depression that defines the cupid's bow of the lips--should be around 90 degrees for men, but higher, up to 120 degrees, for women.

Other Concerns

The shape and size of the tip, the size and angle of the nostrils are also important variables in rhinoplasty. The bridge should be straight, and neither too wide nor too narrow.

Ethnic differences are highly evident in the shape and size of the nose. In the best-looking faces, the features are still all in balance, so that achieving balance always leads to good results, even if they don't numerically match those given here. It requires the experienced eye of a rhinoplasty expert to know how to balance the proportions of all the features to give a nose that looks beautiful on your face. In addition to aesthetics, your nose must also function properly. The revision of the shape of your nose must be conducted so that it does not constrict the airways that can lead to snoring, congestion, even oxygen deprivation during exercise.

Because all these factors must be balanced, it is not uncommon for inexperienced doctors to make mistakes when conducting San Diego nose surgery. If your rhinoplasty did not meet your expectations, consult with a doctor experienced and skilled in rhinoplasty. Dr. Moradi has years of training and has conducted hundreds of successful rhinoplasties.
