San Diego Skin Resurfacing FAQ
What is recovery like following Erbium laser skin resurfacing?
In most cases, our San Diego skin resurfacing patients are fully recovered and back to normal activities within 7 – 10 days. Following the procedure, the treated areas are kept moist with ointment and/or dressings for the first few days. Sunblock should be used when in the sun and make-up can be worn after the first week. Over the next few weeks, your fresh, new pink skin will fade to a normal tone revealing a softer, smoother, younger look.
What are the advantages of laser skin resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing produces more dramatic results, restoring the skin completely. Skin tightening is a main feature either 14% (Erbium) or up to 33% (CO2). Wrinkles are removed with laser skin resurfacing.
Who are the best candidates for skin resurfacing or laser resurfacing?
Although we cannot tell you if you’ll make a good resurfacing candidate without a consultation and exam, generally patients who fit the qualifications are those with photo damaged skin and wrinkles.
Laser resurfacing is not recommended for patients with a history of keloid formation or who’ve used Accutane recently.
Will skin resurfacing affect my skin color?
Whether you choose skin resurfacing or laser skin resurfacing, skin pigmentation may be temporarily altered somewhat in the process. If you have olive skin, brown or black skin, you are more likely to show transient changes in skin color from an increase in pigment to a decrease in pigment (lighter or darker). Skin color returns to your natural skin color when resurfacing is completed. Photodamage is removed. If you are fairer-skinned, you have the least risk of experiencing pigment changes. Your doctor will go over the potential risks with you before your treatment.
Which method of skin resurfacing is right for me?
If you have a darker skin tone, erbium laser resurfacing may work better for you. Erbium resurfacing generally has a quicker recovery time than the CO2 laser. Your doctor will determine which laser is best for you after a full evaluation of your medical history, current physical condition, and desired results.
