Recovery from Rhinoplasty
Many patients often have questions regarding the recovery time involved in nose surgery. Recovery experiences following any type of surgery vary with each patient, but, typically, during the first day or so following rhinoplasty, your nose will probably ache. Your face will feel swollen and puffy and your head may ache. You will be given prescription medication for your discomfort ahead of time, so you will have it with you when you need it. Normally, any pain felt can be controlled with this medication.
Over the course of the first day and for several days after that, the swelling and bruising will increase. Black eyes are not unusual and you may look like you were on the losing end of a fist-fight. Applying cold compresses around, but not directly to, your nose will reduce the swelling and help you feel better.
Within a week or two of your surgery, most of your bruising will be gone. The swelling generally goes away within the first week. You may see some swelling or slight bruises after the first two weeks.
You will probably feel stuffy for a few days after your surgery. During the first few days, you may have some bloody nasal discharge. Even though you feel stuffy, try not to blow your nose for at least one week following surgery.
If you have nasal packing, we will remove it when you have your post-op visits, typically a few days after surgery. After the packing is removed, you will feel better immediately. By the end of two weeks, or even sooner, all of the packing, dressing, splints and sutures will be removed. But, again, all recovery experiences are different for our patients.
